Project Brief

This project transformed a Grade I Listed Lytham Hall space into an exhibition area, adding cladded walls for artwork and a partition with a fire door for safety. All work preserved the building’s historical integrity and was completed while the hall remained open to the public, ensuring careful site management.

What did we deliver?

Cladded walls were installed along the gallery to create display surfaces for art and artifacts. These walls, made from timber and fireproof MDF, met aesthetic and fire safety requirements. Designed to be removable, the cladding ensured no permanent alteration to the building’s original structure.

A partition wall with a fire door was also installed to enhance safety within the exhibition space, complying with fire safety regulations while preserving the architectural integrity. The partition was fitted using modern materials, aligning with the temporary nature of the exhibition.
Stud walls were mounted along walls adjacent to windows and fixed to modern taurus skirting and cornices, rather than the original building fabric, to avoid any damage to the historic structure. The entire project prioritized protecting original features, including historic walls and wooden floorboards.

The angles of the stud walls were calculated to provide optimal lighting for artwork, enhancing the gallery’s functionality without impacting the building’s historical character. After installation, the gallery underwent a thorough painting and decoration process. The new walls were painted to blend seamlessly with the space, ensuring a polished exhibition gallery ready for public use.

Planning and collaboration:

Close coordination with conservation officers ensured strict adherence to Listed Building Consent conditions. This collaborative approach preserved Lytham Hall’s historical integrity while delivering a modern exhibition space. All installations were designed to be fully reversible, using modern skirting and cornice as fixing points to protect the original building fabric.
