This project involved replacing bollard lights at a social housing estate and assessing existing cable conditions. The circuits were initially non-operational, with the cause unknown. The scope also included replacing the single-phase distribution board that powered all communal circuits to ensure proper functionality and continued use.
During the initial investigation, sections of buried Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) cables were found to be damaged or corroded, necessitating a variation in the project scope. This involved excavating and replacing the affected cable routes. Compliance with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) was strictly adhered to, ensuring that all electrical work met the required safety standards. Safety precautions were prioritised, particularly around excavation sites and operating mini diggers, to protect residents frequently passing through the area.
Project management adapted to the discovery of damaged cables by extending the project timeline slightly. This allowed for the excavation, replacement of damaged cables, and restoration of the site. Any block paving disturbed during the process was carefully reinstalled. Despite the necessary changes, effective management kept the project on track and ensured all work was completed to a high standard.
This project highlighted the importance of thorough initial investigations and flexible management. Compliance with BS 7671 was maintained throughout, guaranteeing the safety and reliability of the electrical installation. Despite challenges posed by damaged cables, the project was completed successfully with minimal disruption to residents, restoring full functionality to the communal lighting system.
